The PEPPOL eDelivery network is getting ready for the AS4 communication protocol

AS Server

The PEPPOL infrastructure is in full transformation. OpenPEPPOL and CEF have confirmed that the AS4 information exchange protocol introduction phase has been completed successfully. The adoption of the AS4 protocol in the PEPPOL network forms part of a defined scaled transition process to minimize risks that may be caused by implementation of a new protocol.

Since the wish to replace the AS2 protocol for the AS4 protocol was published in September 2016, both teams have worked with technological suppliers to ensure that the new version of the protocol provides improved quality guarantees in the electronic information exchange results.

Currently, use of AS4 is voluntary within the PEPPOL network. However, the following phase of transition includes compliance with requirements in order for AS4 to become the mandatory information exchange protocol throughout 2019. The use of AS4 is being adopted in increasing numbers amongst all types of organizations, both in Europe as well as throughout other regions in the world due to its advantages in relation to security and reliability of data transfer.

The EDICOM AS.x Server, certified in accordance with e-SENS AS4 specifications

EDICOM, as a technological supplier specialized in electronic information exchange, has its own AS Server, accessible for all customers that require AS connections with their agents. Recently, EDICOM has obtained certification of its AS server (EAS Server) by the European Union, having complied with all technical and security requirements and specifications. We have implemented AS4 through the MADE Project (2016-EU-IA-0063) funded by European INEA Agency.

EDICOM’s AS server also has the Drummond Group Certificate of Interoperability, that ensures a secure exchange of information via EDICOM solutions using the AS2 protocol.

At EDICOM we are ready to use the AS4 protocol with those customers that wish or require it in relation to their communications with their partners.

Communication through this technology allows secure and unfailing exchanges by the use of powerful data encrypting techniques as well as the use of digital certificates.

Access to the EDICOM AS.x Server takes place via the EDICOMNet interconnection services, and frees the user from maintenance, administration and settings tasks. It is designed to send and receive information securely via the Internet, using encrypting techniques that ensure that only the recipient can read the information contained within the message. In addition, it allows you to detect if the document has been altered during transmission, and generates signed receipts, that ensure receipt of the message.

What is AS4?

AS4 translates as Applicability Statement 4, a communication protocol based on HTTPS that comes from OASIS standard specifications. This version is an evolution of the widely used AS2. Version 4 of this protocol, increases security and reliability of document exchanges, along with documents and general information, that may be used in B2B or B2G exchanges.

Currently, the CEF is promoting its use and keeps implementation guides for AS4 specifications, known as e-SENS.

Benefits of using AS networks

  • Point to Point Communication It provides direct and instant transfer of data from the origin to its destination, reducing errors in the exchange of commercial documents between businesses.
  • Deficiencies in transfers: Provides increased reliability and speed in data transfer, increasing supply chain efficiencies.
  • High levels of security: It is designed to send and receive information securely via the Internet, using encrypting techniques that ensure that only the recipient can read the information contained within the message.
  • Issuer authenticity: Implementing electronic signature processes, it also allows for a guarantee of authentication at its origin.
  • Data integrity: It allows detection of if the document has been altered during transmission of the information via digital certificates.
  • Communications traceability: It generates signed receipts, that ensure receipt of messages.

EDICOM is also PEPPOL Access Point in the European Union

Accreditation as a PEPPOL Access Point or authorized third party enables EDICOM to link up with the PEPPOL platform, through which private companies and governments in Europe can exchange any kind of e-documents. EDICOM was also granted an SMP certificate by the OpenPEPPOL Association to run its own SMP, so there is no need to work with outside connections or third parties to obtain information from registered users on the network.

EDICOM participates in MADE CEF eDelivery Project (2016-EU-IA-0063)
