SaaS: The Revolution of Technological Services in the Cloud

05/05/2017

Software as a Service

The use of cloud computing is being consolidated in the business world. Companies of all sizes and in all sectors are increasingly turning to this technology. In fact, an Intel Security report states that in the next two years, organizations will dedicate up to 80% of their IT budget to the cloud. Of course, the concept of the cloud is broad and encompasses a multitude of segments. Among them, the SaaS market is one of the most mature.

What is SaaS?

SaaS stands for software as a service. It is a technological model that allows users to access a particular software through the cloud. Contrary to what happened a few years ago, a company no longer has to buy the license to own this solution in order to install it on its server. It rents the service instead.

In the last quarter of 2016, the SaaS segment reached a worldwide turnover of $13 million dollars. This figure, presented in a report by Synergy Research Group, represents a growth of 32% over the previous year. In addition, it is predicted that the use of this technological modality in the cloud will double by 2020.

Why has there been an increase in the use of SaaS?

Software as a service is increasing both in large and medium sized companies. This rapid expansion is due to its advantages some of which are as follows:

  • Economic savings

With SaaS, the company no longer has to make a big investment that requires it to buy the software as a product. This economic cost can go towards any necessities that arise with adapting this technological solution. In addition, it is no longer necessary to have a computer maintenance team, as this task is outsourced with the use of SaaS.

  • Flexibility

When a company purchases software, it has to adapt to the solution and not the other way around. This problem disappears with SaaS. Furthermore, it is possible to extend or reduce the contracted service easily. This adaptability has made it an ideal choice for small and large companies.

  • Greater security

SaaS providers ensure the security of the data of the companies that use these types of solutions. Typically, these platforms are accredited by various certifications and guarantee by contract the integrity and confidentiality of information through mechanisms such as encryption or digital signatures.

  • Permanent maintenance

Technology advances rapidly. This causes software to become obsolete shortly after purchase. On the contrary, SaaS solutions remain up-to-date at all times, adapting to market developments. This maintenance is done by dedicated technicians, does not involve additional economic costs and also allows the uninterrupted operation of the service, something that would not be possible with in-house software.

  • Global accessibility

This is an advantage that is gaining momentum with the passage of time because globalization has reached companies from all sectors. With SaaS, it is possible to access the company's technological solution from anywhere with a simple Internet connection, so that mobility is no longer a problem.
