eIDAS Regulation: The Case of e-Archiving [White Paper]
We live in an increasingly digital Europe. However, for e-transactions among citizens, businesses and the public sector to become consolidated, it is necessary to set out a trustworthy environment. With this aim, EU Regulation 910/2014 was drafted, better known as eIDAS, which came into force for member states in July 2016.
The rollout of this standard gives a final boost to digital transformation in EU businesses. To this end, the EDICOM expert team has drawn up a free guide with in-depth explanation of what this ruling on “electronic identification and trust services for e-transactions in Europe” entails.
What does the Expert Analysis include?
This white paper covers the entire eIDAS ruling regulatory framework, the first ensuring interoperability of electronic identification mechanisms throughout all Member States. In practice, its existence enables businesses to engage in secure remote transactions with other companies or government agencies in any country of the Union. This is because it is possible to accredit the identity of the partners involved and the originality of the documents, whereby e-transactions now have the same value as those that used to be carried out on paper.
One of the most notable figures arising from the eIDAS regulation is the creation of qualified trust service providers. The regulation sets out 5 trust services for paperless transactions throughout the European Union with full legal and judicial assurances: e-signature, electronic seal, electronic time stamp, certified electronic delivery and authentication of websites. Qualified trust service providers are technology suppliers which, like EDICOM, have been accredited by a higher body to apply these e-identification mechanisms.

In the second part of the White Paper, the EDICOM experts approach one of the challenges faced by companies as digitization advances: electronic safekeeping. The trust services listed in the regulation equate e-documents to their traditional counterparts on paper. However, in order to maintain this legal validity indefinitely, secure archiving is needed.
In this regard, EDICOM, as accredited trusted third party, has developed a solution that not only applies the identification mechanisms stipulated by the regulation, but also stores these documents securely. In this sense, the files kept are subjected to permanent audits to ensure their integrity and authenticity through time.
