OFTP2 Communication Protocol Replaces ISDN in Automotive Sector
Internet communication protocols (HTTPS) are eclipsing the telephone networks that were used until now, evidenced by the migration to the OFTP2 protocol that the leading companies in the automotive sector have been carrying out for some years to replace its predecessor OFTP1, which used to run on ISDN lines.
This change will be accelerated by the decision of some telephone operators to cancel their ISDN services, converting their infrastructures and services to communications via TCP/IP technology. In Germany, Deutsche Telekom is cancelling its ISDN service in 2018, following in the footsteps of Swisscom, which did so in 2017. Other operators have similar plans scheduled for 2020 (Orange) or 2025 (BT). This switch, driven by telecommunications companies, will undoubtedly boost the use of IP communications. In the automotive sector, this will mean the definitive leap forward in rollout of the OFTP2 protocol demanded by the main automobile companies for their EDI communications with suppliers. So, both TIER I and TIER II businesses should consider converting their communications to OFTP2 as soon as possible.
Exchanging files and information through local or regional lines has become obsolete, taking into account the access to Internet lines that allow an encrypted and more secure exchange, including for very heavy files typical of the automotive industry.
