What will future Data Centres be like?

27/05/2013

A few days ago, the GCN portal, specializing in IT sector information, published an extensive article in which experts forecast the changes likely to affect future Data Centres.

The main conclusion is that so-called software defined networking (SDN) will have a high profile. This is determined by the higher capacity and better features of hardware devices, which will enable configuration of Data Centres with fewer resources, tending towards the virtualization of the different services involved, eventually creating totally software-controlled infrastructures.

This development could lead to greater agility, adaptability and easier management, increased availability and fault tolerance, in addition to notable cost savings in physical infrastructures.

Beyond the changes that might come about in the hardware infrastructures of future Data Centres, it is necessary to bear in mind the challenges that may arise when managing an increasingly burgeoning volume of data due to the exponential growth in the use of cloud-based applications, both in the private and professional scope.

We must remember that the number of devices connected to the network is continually growing and in future Data Centres will also need to be able to deal with the information generated. In fact, according to the report, in 2020 the number of these devices could rise to 50 billion, compared to the 10 billion currently up and running.
