e-Invoicing and Brazil: Nota Fiscal Electrónica or NF-e
The NF-e Electronic Invoice is a file documenting the purchase and sale of goods and their movements in Brazil. Use of the NF-e is mandatory when billing for goods and issuing this document involves the declaration of the same to the SEFAZ (Brazilian Tax Authority) beforehand, even before despatching the products.
The NF-e issuing process consists of the vendor company generating an XML document and electronic signature of the document with electronic certificates issued by accredited authorities in Brazil.
This document is sent via web services to the SEFAZ, which after validation will issue the corresponding authorization, notifying the issuing company. At this point, with the NF-e authorized, the issuing company may issue the DANFE (NF-e Auxiliary Document), which is a despatch advice related with the e-Invoice (nota fiscal) authorized and must accompany the goods during transport.
The authorized NF-e must be sent to clients, acting as an official invoice detailing the commercial transaction between buyer and seller.
