Deadline for Brazilian carriers to issue Electronic Invoice reached
1 December was the deadline set by the SEFAZ (Brazilian Tax Authority) for all companies transporting goods and services by land, air, sea and rail, as well as through channels or piping systems such as gas or oil pipelines.
Regulation SINIEF 18/11 and its amendment 12/08 already stated the requirement to invoice electronically by issuing CT-e to the larger Brazilian transport companies, progressively extending this obligation to other transport service providers in the country.
The spread of CT-e as the electronic billing document consolidates the process started up in 2005 with promotion of the NF-e as billing document for the sale of products, with the final goal of totally eliminating paper format tax documents in Brazil.
To issue CT-e, carriers must be accredited with the SEFAZ tax authority in their state. Likewise, they must be registered in the rest of the states where they operate and hold a digital certificate issued by an authority accredited by the Brazilian KPI (Key Public Infrastructure), and adapt their information systems to be able to issue the new electronic document required to document the billing for their services.
