What is electronic invoicing like in Guatemala?

La factura electrónica en Guatemala

The process, now mandatory for certain taxpayers since 2013, is noted for its high degree of automation, which streamlines and speeds up admin management. In addition, the system provides greater fiscal transparency in transactions with the Tax Authority (SAT).

The Guatemalan e-invoicing system, FACe, usually involves four stakeholders: taxpayers issuing invoices, known as EFACE; software providers; the SAT, and generators of electronic invoices, known as GFACE. The latter group is responsible for validating and signing the invoices before they reach their recipients and declaring them to the Administration. Currently, only a very limited number of companies are authorized to provide this service, as they must meet a series of requirements laid down in the legislation. These include the need to be based in Guatemala and at least three years of ongoing business activities in the country, in addition to having their entire technological infrastructure located in the country.

In view of these requirements, suppliers of electronic invoicing solutions must provide a joint service with a GFACE. In the case of EDICOM, which has its own platform totally adapted to the FACe regime, the collaboration agreement was signed with the company COINSA. This way, the entire process of generating, sending and declaring electronic invoices is assured, as set forth in the legislation currently in force.

Billing process

E-invoicing in Guatemala takes place in 4 steps, carried out almost automatically:

  • EDICOM generates an XML file, which contains enough information to create the invoice.
  • The GFACE checks out the document and, if everything is in order, returns it with an authorization code designated CAE.
  • Next, the document is sent to its recipient via the EDICOM platform.
  • At the end of the month, the taxpayer checks the invoices and GFACE creates a summary file, adds the CRMF code and forwards it to the SAT, so that they are officially declared.

International e-invoicing platform

The EDICOM e-billing platform maximizes the benefits of this technological leap thanks to its international nature. The solution is adapted to the billing standards set forth by countries worldwide. This means that with a single software suite, large companies can operate anywhere in the world where they engage in business activities.
