EDICOM strengthens position in air freight sector

04/02/2015

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has included EDICOM in the Strategic Partnership (SP) program, which brings together leading providers of electronic solutions for the air freight industry. In this case, EDICOM joins the platform as a key partner in the Cargo XML area.

The IATA is an organization with over 70 years of history representing 240 airlines, amounting to 84% of all air traffic. With this strategic initiative, the association aims to share ideas and collaborate more closely with key partners. The final goal is to improve practices in the air freight process through technology solutions based on the Cargo XML standard. In this sense, EDICOM’s experts can provide, for example, different recommendations on the most appropriate XML messaging requirements for freight transport.

The Cargo XML standard is the evolution of its predecessor Cargo IMP (Interchange Message Procedures), both based on electronic data interchange (EDI) technology and cutting down the use of paper and red tape. This way, air freight companies can improve the processes related with exchanging and integrating documents. In addition, all logistics operations are optimized, as agents can check real time all freight-related documents, overcoming the structural and data limitations entailed in Cargo IMP.

Currently, Cargo XML is in full expansion. Increasing numbers of airlines, freight forwarders and airports around the world are implementing this technology and, for the coming years, IATA foresees even greater growth. This is why EDICOM’s role as expert in this standard and member of the Strategic Partnership program become highly significant in the future of Cargo XML.

Cargo XML solution

We have developed EDICOM Air, our e-Air Waybill platform, which automatically generates the cargo information based on the XML standards set by IATA. The solution is even able to translate the previous Cargo IMP standard, resulting in Cargo XML messages. Subsequently, these sensitive documents are sent by means of secure private communication networks (VANs) to the freight forwarders, airlines and customs authorities, ensuring real-time traceability. Moreover, through the EDICOM Public Administrations HUB, the solution lets you link up directly and securely with the customs authorities of each country using the new IATA model, to submit the standardized Cargo Manifest declaration.
