The airfreight sector could save 7,800 tons of paper each year. This is the goal that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) aims to achieve with the rollout of electronic communications through an initiative designated e-freight. To achieve this aim, the IATA is promoting use of the Cargo-XML standard for exchanging messages. We discussed this new scheme with Juan Luis Moreno, Key Account Manager at EDICOM Mexico.

“With the rollout of Cargo-XML, the time given over to freight processing is cut by 70%”, explains Moreno. This logistics standard embodies the technical evolution of the traditional Cargo-IMP used in the sector, but is much more interoperable. Although the uptake rate is currently between 25% and 30%, the figure is expected to grow to 45% by the end of the year. In other words, Cargo-XML is steadily growing. In fact, since 1 June its use is mandatory in Mexico.

In this Expert Chat, which you can download here, Juan Luis Moreno explains the present and future of this new communications standard: how it emerged, how it has developed and what the challenges to be faced are. He also goes over the measures taken in countries such as Mexico and Argentina to foster its use, where we even find relevant legislation. Nevertheless, the adoption of Cargo-XML is far from being limited to these two countries. It is also used in others such as Chile, the United States and Canada.

Adaptation to the electronic model currently poses a challenge for companies in the sector, whose systems are not yet ready. In this sense, Juan Luis Moreno gives us the keys to working with this new standard, which improves operability and lowers costs, with no need to migrate the systems. “We let businesses keep on working the way they have been doing so far and our technicians take care of transforming the message into the required format”, adds EDICOM's Business Manager in Mexico.
